Foreign Sound by Fernando Oliveira

 

Experience a captivating performance dedicated to one of Brazil's most iconic music styles - Bossa Nova, samba, and reinterpretations of international music in the alluring Bossa Nova style. At its core, the rhythm of Foreign Sound is deeply rooted in samba, with jazz influences adding an additional layer of sophistication.

 

Bossa Nova, popularized by the legendary João Gilberto in the late 1950s, holds a special place in the heart of Brazilian music. It is often referred to as the father of bossa nova, and its melodic charm has resonated worldwide.

 

In this project, Fernando Oliveira showcases his own original songs, showcasing the essence of Brazilian music, including bossa nova, samba, and Brazilian popular music (mpb), enriched by rhythmic drums and captivating dance-infused beats. The influence of soul and the elegance of jazz and pop can also be felt, adding a modern touch to the performance.

 

Arriving on the European and South American music scenes, this project promises to breathe new life into Bossa Nova and Brazilian jazz. It has gained significant recognition within Amsterdam's music scene, with over 50 concerts held between 2022 and 2023 at various venues including cafes, bars, theaters, and unique site-specific locations. Foreign Sound represents not only a celebration of Brazilian music but also an act of cultural appreciation. Even when interpreting songs unrelated to Brazil, Oliveira's elegant phrasing and supple voice breathe new life into them.

 

Despite having resided in Holland for eight years, Foreign Sound is more than just a musical statement for Oliveira. It aims to reinterpret these songs, making them fresh and captivating for listeners from diverse cultural backgrounds.

 

The concert Foreign Sound is a testament to how nations can harmoniously blend their cultures and traditions, resulting in a harmonious exchange. It is a triumph both musically and politically, showcasing the power of musical expression.
